Rhythm Complements is always a highlight of the World Music Drumming curriculum for my 6th grade students. Each group I taught during the 06-07 school year expanded on the ideas they learned from Rhythm Complements and built a complete ensemble, which they performed at the end of their session for the rest of the students in the middle school.

I am continually amazed and surprised by the creative vocabulary and sense of ensemble that develops from these activities. The documents below are the ensembles created by my students. They are all on PDF format, and can be viewed using Adobe's free PDF reader.

This year, the students in some sections created ensembles in the Latin style in addition to the African-style ensembles created by each section.

The second trimester students revisited Rhythm Complements later in the term and composed some more sophisticated ensembles. African Ensemble #13 is particularly creative. I've given up on trying to make logical sense out of my own numbering system... maybe I should go back to titles. :)

Each class composed ensembles in African and Latin American styles this year. They came up with some creative titles as well...
